CS171 - Summer 2001
Exercise in Online Learning
There will be a change in the curriculum and schedule
for the remaining portion of CS171-Summer 2001. In the spirit of
"Communicating via Computers," we will spend several days during
the next two weeks engaged in an exercise in online learning.
During Spring 2001, I was one of three instructors
involved in a pilot project here at UM. I put my Introduction
to Computer Modeling (CS172) course curriculum online and taught the
course using Blackboard, a software package designed specifically
for online education. Blackboard offers utilities to:
-
read documents, such as lecture notes, syllabus,
etc. online;
-
take tests and complete surveys online;
-
submit assignments and view grades online;
-
communicate in various ways.
Since you will very likely take an online course
at some point in your education or career, this exercise will provide you
with a useful skill. Please note the schedule
changes. Due to time constraints, this exercise will replace
approximately one to 1.5 days of Excel and one day of Web Design.
Specific exercises related to Blackboard, including participation in online
lectures, will be assigned and graded. A mandatory lecture / demonstration
will be given in a lecture classroom on Tuesday, June 19 during regular
class time. The location will be announced asap.
