Backing Up Files

It is always a good idea to have copies of work that is important. Files can be corrupted, disks can be damaged and overall work can be lost. It is quite simple to backup information. The easiest way to backup single files is to create copies on separate media. If one important file is on floppy disk, the file should be copied to the hard-drive, or another floppy disk.

Backup files to the hard drive

When transferring files between media, the Mac OS always creates a copy. To backup a file from the floppy disk to the hard-drive, drag the icon of the file on the floppy disk to the hard-drive icon. When the hard-drive is highlighted (changes color), drop the file. A dialog will appear showing the copy progress. When the dialog disappears, the copy is complete and a backup of the file has been created.

Backup files to a folder on a different disk

If you have a specific folder that you wish the file to be copied to, as long as the folder is on a different disk, drag the icon of the file on top of the folder and drop it. The file should then be copied to the folder. If the file disappears, then the folder is on the same disk as the file and was just moved into that folder. Open the folder, locate the file and move it back out.

Backup files to another floppy disk

To copy a file or folder between two floppy disks is not difficult, it can be done in 5 easy steps:

  1. Copy the file/folder from the floppy disk to the hard drive of the computer.
  2. Eject the floppy disk and place the new disk into the drive.
  3. Copy the file/folder from the hard drive to the floppy disk.
  4. Throw the file/folder on the hard drive into the trash.
  5. Eject the floppy disk.

The easiest way to copy an entire floppy disk to another floppy disk, is to use a program from Apple Computer, Inc. called Disk Copy. Disk Copy can be downloaded at <http://swupdates.info.apple.com/>. It is located in the Macintosh Utilities area.
