Masters of Science in Computer Science (MSCS)

The Department of Computer Science offers a Master of Science degree in computer science. The master's program provides a well-rounded education in the field of computer science. Students who successfully complete the program will have acquired the ability to think critically, to communicate effectively, to solve problems effectively, to remain current in the field, and to be able to use discipline specific knowledge effectively. A mixture of practical and theoretical courses is included. The program prepares students both for professional positions in software development and for further graduate work in computer science.

Students are exposed to a variety of computing, programming and networking environments. Students have the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member on a professional project or thesis. The relatively small size of the program and the department allows for a lot of personal contact with faculty. Students with a degree in another field are welcome and prerequisite courses can often be taken simultaneously with required courses.

Computer Science Specialization within the Mathematics Ph.D. Program:
The Computer Science Department and the Mathematics Department collaborate in offering a computer science specialization within the Mathematics Ph.D. program. Students in this emphasis can take one of two preliminary exams in computer science, can have one of their breadth areas be computer science, and the comprehensive examination and dissertation must be in computer science. For more information, contact the Chair of Computer Science at wright@cs.umt.edu.

Teaching and Research Assistantships
The Department of Computer Science offers a number of graduate teaching assistantships and research assistantships to students admitted to the MS in Computer Science program. Teaching assistants typically teach lower level courses and/or assist in upper division classes. Research assistants assist faculty with funded research projects. In general Teaching assistants and Research assistants are paid $9000 plus a supplement of $1300 per academic year. Please follow these links to access more financial information:

Project/Thesis Credits
Six (6) credits of project/thesis work are required for a MSCS graduate degree. These credits can be registered for by enrolling in CS 599. A student may sign up for an unlimited amount of credits at the CS 599 level, but only six credits will be calculated toward their degree. Thus, if a student has a need or interest to sign up for additional CS 599 courses (i.e. to maintain a full courseload, or maintain a continuous registration status), he/she can utilize this option.

To ensure that adequate progress is being made toward the successful completion of a Master of Science in Computer Science, students will have two (2) years from the first time they have registered for their first CS 599 credits as a Thesis or Project. For example, a student registering for CS 599 for the first time during Fall Semester of 2008 will be expected to complete their Thesis/Project by the end of the Summer Semester of 2010. Students who fail to complete their Thesis/Project requirements within this time limit who wish to remain in the graduate program will need to completely resubmit a new Thesis/Project proposal and committee selection stage. Students making reasonable progress in their Thesis/Project may apply for an extention of this initial two year period. Such and application will be submitted to the Department Chair for consideration by the entire faculty. An extention will only be granted under unique circumstances.
