The University of Montana Machine Learning Research Lab (MLRL) is headquartered in the Department of Computer Science and is under the direction of Prof. David Opitz . The focus of MLRL is both on the development of learning algorithms and the application of these algorithms to poorly understood real-world problems. Machine learning research includes theory refinement, neural networks, genetic algorithms, image analysis, ensemble methods, anytime learning, and feature construction and selection. Real-world application areas include digital image analysis, computational biology, petroleum engineering, information retrieval, telephone diagnostics, and real-time control.
