Welcome to the Computer Science Department of the University of Montana. The department was founded in 1969, and in 1984 began to offer a master's degree. The Computer Science Department's undergraduate program at The University of Montana was accredited by the Computer Science Accreditation Commission (CSAC) of the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), a specialized accrediting body. The growing utility of computers in research and education, as well as the increased impact of computers on our modern society, strongly implies that a knowledge of computers and their capabilities should be a part of the basic education of all students.
The Department of Computer Science then has a two-fold mission. First, to provide appropriate non-major courses to meet the needs of all students, and second, to offer a major and minor for those students who want to pursue a career in this discipline. The objective of the undergraduate major/minor curriculum in computer science is to develop professionally competent and broadly educated computer scientists who wish to pursue professional careers or graduate studies. -Alden H.
